Last year while in Prague, my husband and I got the chance to go to a Health spa where they offered a treatment for removal of dry skin from your feet and legs. It was bizarre having to immerse your legs in tanks of tiny little hungry fish that started nibbling on your dry skin, eating it away. The price you pay for soft supple skin! At the end of the treatment our skin was smoother and we felt that we had done something good for our bodies.
Numerous magazines are published with ways to get your body looking and feeling healthy. In summary they all say the same thing: In order to be healthy and fit we need to eat “healthy” natural foods, have a skin care routine and do regular exercise. We can train our bodies and achieve physical exercise through walking, jogging, going to a gym, playing sports and the list goes on and on.
Now this is all good stuff for our bodies, but given that our brain is a vital organ within our body, do we adequately exercise our brain and hence our mind? Do we provide our brain with the stimuli to keep it alert and sharp? Don’t just train your body…train your mind – Keep fit inside and out!
Going to training sessions, classes, workshops, forums, seminars, symposiums and conferences are all forms of learning that allow us get knowledge and keep our mind fit. Regular short courses and forums take very little time and can:
• Increase your knowledge
• Be informative and keep you up-to-date
• Motivate you and improve morale
• Give you new skills or improve on old skills
• An avenue to meet new people and add to your network
• Provide a social outlet
As well as keeping up to speed with information within your area of expertise or hobbies, we need to open ourselves to learning new things. When was the last time you attended a course or talk about a topic that did not relate to your job but was something – out of the ordinary- different from the usual? Do not be afraid to try out something different it may be new and refreshing and open the door to new professional and personal opportunities.
Training does not have to be a costly venture; there are many organisations that offer free seminars, forums, breakfast talks or information sessions. There are training organisations that offer cheap short courses in addition to clubs, interest groups or professional associations you can join. Keep your eyes open to see what is available.
So what are you waiting for……go out there, learn and keep your mind fit and healthy.
